2015 Noise Pop Film Festival

San Francisco’s annual Noise Pop festival celebrates alternative culture, particularly music, with live musical performances in various venues across San Francisco.  This year’s Noise Pop film festival offers music-themed films on subjects ranging from saxophone player Rahsaan Roland Kirk to a program of Spike Jonze’s skate videos to a film about the failed rock star dream of New Jersey’s Rye Coalition.

Cinequest Film Festival 25

San Jose’s Cinequest Film Festival launches its 25th edition this week with a mix of technological innovation (Barco Escape), high-profile celebrity appearances (actress Rosario Dawson, director John Boorman), and acclaimed films (Sundance winner Slow West, Foreign Film Oscar nominee Wild Tales) making their Bay Area debuts.  Some of the highlights among this year’s offerings include Batkid Begins, the behind-the-scenes story of how a 5-year-old’s wish turned San Francisco into Gotham City for a day; Miss India America, the story of an overachiever who finds that winning a beauty pageant is far from a done deal; Corn Island, a mesmerizing tale of a farmer and his granddaughter struggling to raise their winter food supply on a small arable but seasonal patch of land; and the aforementioned Wild Tales, a collection of six stories about the extreme lengths people will go to exact revenge…and the comic and catastrophic results of their actions.

About the Author

I'm a film reviewer for the Beyond Chron blog. Agnes Varda and Hirokazu Kore-eda are among my favorite filmmakers. I occasionally break down and watch a good action film...but don't tell anyone.
