Rosamund Pike In A True-Life Interracial Romance

Rosamund Pike co-stars with David Oyelowo in this light weekend’s heavy-hitter. It’s a drama about an interracial romance that caused a real-life international furor.

But the gem of the weekend is a Polish disco musical fantasy which takes a Little Mermaid-like story in some creepy directions. And for those who want to catch the Oscar nominated short documentaries but don’t want to trek to San Rafael, the Roxie will be screening that program this weekend and next.

Everybody Loves Somebody

Clara (Karla Souza) has a successful medical practice in Los Angeles. Her love life, on the other hand, is a trainwreck of one-night stands and commitment fears. When Clara’s parents decide to officially tie the knot after 40 years of unlicensed co-habitation, the doctor goes to the family gathering in Baja, Mexico. There, she reconnects with old flame Daniel, a globe-trotting adventurer. The rekindled romantic spark, though, clashes with Clara’s burgeoning relationship with emotionally grounded medical resident Asher.

Opens February 17 at the Century 20 Daly City, the Century at Tanforan, and the Redwood Downtown 20

The Lure

Gold and Silver are two mermaid sisters who come ashore after one of them falls for a man. The object of affection turns out to play bass for a Polish 1980s-ish strip club house band. Gold and Silver wind up working at the same strip club as singers and strippers. Lack of female genitalia don’t dim the mermaids’ employability, but their regular feasting on human flesh might. Eventually, their sisterly bond gets seriously tested. Did we also mention this is a musical?

Opens February 17, 2017 at the Roxie Theatre

A United Kingdom

In the late 1940s, King Seretse Khama of Botswana (David Oyelowo, Selma) decides to marry white Londoner Ruth Williams (Rosamund Pike, Gone Girl). That act sparks an international uproar because their interracial marriage comes just as South Africa starts implementing apartheid. In this true-life drama, what happens next would alter the course of African history.

Opens February 17 at the Embarcadero Center Cinema and the Sundance Kabuki Cinemas
